The plug-in variant is rated by the EPA to provide up to 29 miles of combined electric driving range. The Ioniq EV acquitted itself very well on our 200-mile highway test route, beating its EPA highway rating by 1 MPGe and falling 10 miles short of the EPA's quoted highway range. The Ioniq Electric is rated at 124 miles of EV range, with an EPA-estimated 150 MPGe in the city and 122 MPGe on the highway, making it more efficient than many EV competitors. The Ioniq Limited we tested fell 2 mpg short of its EPA estimate during our test, but it's still one of just a few cars we've tested that have topped 50 mpg. The base Ioniq Blue model is the most fuel-efficient hybrid on the market. Pleasantly surprising are its composed ride and relaxed highway manners. If pushed hard in corners, the body leans, but overall the car feels stable and competent in most every situation. The Ioniq holds its own on curvy roads, responding reliably to steering inputs and maintaining a firm grip on the road. If a 120-volt outlet is all that's available, a full charge will take slightly less than nine hours. The good news is that the plug-in Ioniq charges quickly at a 240-volt outlet, requiring a bit more than two hours to restore full charge. The plug-in hybrid Ioniq's combination of a 1.6-liter engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be familiar to fans of the Ioniq and its cousin, the Kia Niro. The Ioniq EV doesn't feel as zippy as the Bolt from standstill, forcing the driver to dip deeper into the throttle to achieve the instant zoom that makes EVs so appealing. Shift timing isn't perfect in Eco mode the transmission pauses too long to downshift when you want to accelerate. The Ioniq hybrid isn't quick, requiring 8.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 mph. Dislikes: All models lack quickness, minimal regenerative braking. Likes: Transmission avoids engine droning, available paddle shifters. We'd choose the $25,085 mid-level SEL trim which adds, among other features, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats with driver lumbar support, and LED brake lights. The base hybrid trim (called Blue) is a good choice for scrimpers. Instead, we'd choose the hybrid model, which earns excellent fuel-economy ratings with few compromises. The Ioniq Electric's 124-mile range isn't enough to make it competitive against the likes of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, and it's too difficult to keep the plug-in model in EV mode for our taste. The battery's charge on the EV and plug-in hybrid can now be managed remotely from a smartphone app, which is standard on both models. Along with the added driver-assistance technology, the Ioniq has an updated voice-recognition system. A driver-attention monitor and automatic high-beam headlights are new options automated emergency braking is now standard on the SEL model. The 2019 Ioniq is basically a carry-over model that adds several new features. What's more, neither the plug-in nor the EV can match the best in their class for range-but a well-packaged interior and gimmick-free exterior design help to ease some of our qualms. We're not ready to genuflect just yet-the Ioniq avoids typical hybrid droning by opting for a traditional automatic transmission instead of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), but its hybrid powertrains could still use some refinement. All three variants have impressed us with their fuel efficiency, likable driving character, and, in the case of the EV model, usable electric range. The Ioniq was launched with a hybrid model before growing to include an EV and, finally, a plug-in hybrid.
